SCORED! THE ASHTON HOLD SPECIAL WORLD CUP ‘66 DAY

On Friday 28th July we were excited to hold an event for The World Cup 1966 Anniversary Day - celebrating England’s football heroes of 50 years ago, in honour the famous 4-2 win over West Germany at Wembley.

Many of our residents were mostly thirty-somethings and remember well watching captain Bobby Moore lift the Jules Rimet trophy after England won its first and only football World Cup!

Everyone took part in the fun, with our team dressing up in football shirts and serving mini pies and bovril drinks before everybody settled down to watch a DVD copy of the game. There were plenty of cheers from residents and visitors alike when Geoff Hurst scored twice in extra time to seal England’s victory and bring the memories flooding back.

Our Manager, Tracy Heyes, later held a Question of Sport football quiz while care home assistant Charlotte Castle performed some entertaining football skills in the care home's landscaped gardens. We also kitted out our reception with Leicester City football shirts, scarves and posters following the club's fantastic Premier League victory last season.

Tracy said: “Many of our residents - as do many other people - look back nostalgically at when England won the World Cup so with it being the 50-year anniversary since that memorable day we thought what better way to celebrate it all over again than holding a special day to commentate it.

“When everybody settled down to watch the DVD it was like it was live on TV such was the shouting and cheering from some of our gentleman residents! It was a fabulous afternoon and everybody enjoyed it very much.”
